Integrating multiple data sources with species distribution models to estimate the distribution and abundance of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) in the United States by Web Editor, last updated: Oct 03, 2025 06:07 PM
Our study provides an important example of how datasets collected at different spatial scales under different observation protocols can be integrated via SDMs to improve abundance-based modeling and correct for weaknesses of individual datasets. Our modeling framework provides regional estimates of the drivers of bobwhite abundance and range-wide estimates of abundance for guiding both local and range-wide bobwhite conservation.

Following Hurricane Helene in September, 2024 many organizations quickly began the work of assessing impacts of the storm on freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, but without any region-wide coordination. As recovery efforts have proceeded rapidly and federal and state funding streams have begun to flow, it has become apparent that some level of coordination and collaboration across organizational and jurisdictional boundaries will help ensure effective application of these resources and the ability to track their effectiveness over time.  What we learn from the impacts of and recovery from this storm can help us better prepare for future storms in the region and beyond.

Wildland Fire-Wildfire by Tab Manager, last updated: Oct 01, 2025 12:05 PM
The Southeast has a complex fire environment unlike any other in the nation. While fire has long played a critical role in the landscapes across the Southeast, it is becoming increasingly difficult for agencies, organizations, and landowners to plan for and respond effectively to wildfire, while protecting vulnerable communities and providing for firefighter safety. The Southeast leads the nation in the number of annual wildland fire events.
Wildland Fire-Prescribed Burning by Tab Manager, last updated: Oct 01, 2025 12:05 PM
Prescribed fire, also known as controlled burning, refers to the controlled application of fire to help restore health to fire-adapted environments, benefitting wildlife and timber values. Prescribed fire reintroduces the beneficial effects of fire into an ecosystem, producing the kinds of vegetation and landscapes we want, and reducing the hazard of catastrophic wildfire caused by excessive fuel buildup.
