WLFW East Region Conservation Webinar Series: Northern Bobwhite Session #16 “MythBusters”
Session 16 of the “Northern Bobwhite” mini-series was presented by Nathan Eldridge with Quail Forever in Georgia. This session focuses on tackling common myths surrounding bobwhite quail decline and what research actually shows. Topics covered include fire ants, coyotes, turkeys, and releasing pen-raised quail.
Wildlife Wednesdays Webinar Series: Northern Bobwhite Quail Ecology & Conservation
New Jersey Audubon's Kati DePaola discusses Northern Bobwhite Quail ecology and conservation programs.
Conservation Practice #396 Aquatic Organism Passage - ACF Conservation Practices
Aquatic Organism Passage is the modification or removal of barriers that restrict or impede movement of aquatic organisms. This video explores how the Native Village of Tyonek implemented this conservation practice in Tyonek, Alaska.
Conservation Practice #657 Wetland Restoration - ACF Conservation Practices
Wetland Restoration is returning a former or degraded wetland to its previous wetland condition. This video explores how Nathan Hudson in Laurel, DE, is using this practice to return farmland to its original condition as a wetland, providing wildlife habitat and improving water quality. (Video features wetlands throughout Delaware.)
Conservation Practice #345/329 Reduced Till/No Till - ACF Conservation Practices
No Till is maintaining crop residue throughout the year and planting directly into it. This video explores how Blaine Hitchens in Laurel, DE, is using this practice on his cropland to improve his soil health and reduce his input costs.
Conservation Practice #391 Riparian Forest Buffers - ACF Conservation Practices
A riparian forest buffer is an area of trees or shrubs located adjacent to a body of water. The vegetation extends outward from the water body for a specified distance necessary to provide a minimum level of protection or enhancement. This video explores how Forrest Pritchard implemented this conservation practice on his farm in Berryville, Virginia.
Conservation Practice #327 Conservation Cover - ACF Conservation Practices
Conservation cover is establishing and maintaining perennial vegetative cover to protect soil and water resources on land retired from agricultural production or other lands needing permanent protective cover that will not be used for forage production. This video explores how Darrell Kjerstad implemented this conservation practice on his farm in Quinn, South Dakota.
WRE Program Wetland Reserve Easements - ACF Conservation Practices
Wetland Reserve Easements help private and tribal landowners protect, restore and enhance wetlands which have been previously degraded due to agricultural uses. This video explores how the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians and NRCS are working together to implement this practice in North Liberty, Indiana.
Conservation Practice #580 Streambank Protection - ACF Conservation Practices
Streambank and shoreline protection consists of applying vegetative or structural measures to stabilize and protect banks of streams, lakes, estuaries, or excavated channels from scour or erosion. This video explores how Stoney Burningham implemented this conservation practice in Panguitch, Utah.
Conservation Practice #382 Fencing - ACF Conservation Practices
A fence is a constructed barrier to animals or people. This video explores how Paul Lisai of West Glover, VT, is using fencing to manage the cattle on his dairy farm.
Wildlife Wednesdays Webinar Series: American Black Duck Ecology & Conservation
New Jersey NRCS' Partner Biologist from Ducks Unlimited, Ben Langey, discusses American Black Duck ecology and conservation programs.
Wildlife Wednesdays Webinar Series: Intro to New Jersey NRCS Conservation Programs
Introduction to New Jersey NRCS Conservation Programs, Working Lands for Wildlife, & Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program.
WLFW East Region Conservation Webinar Series: Northern Bobwhite Session #15 “Shortleaf Pine Restoration Associated Plant Communities"
Session 15 of the “Northern Bobwhite” mini-series was presented by Mike Oliver with the Shortleaf Pine Initiative. This session focuses on shortleaf pine restoration and the various plant communities associated with these special habitats. Topics covered include various shortleaf pine ecosystems, the plants associated with each, and resources available to learn more about shortleaf pine.
WLFW East Region Conservation Webinar Series: Northern Bobwhite Session #14 “Pollinators and Quail”
Session 14 of the “Northern Bobwhite” mini-series was presented by Dr. DJ McNeil at the University of Kentucky. This session focuses on recent research studying pollinator responses to common NRCS practices used for bobwhite habitat management.
Dec. 18 Rescheduled Webinar: Assessing At-Risk Bee Species for Proactive Management
This webinar will detail how SE CASC is collaboratively conducting assessments for partner-identified at-risk bee species and two NatureServe tools: climate change vulnerability index and conservation status ranks.
Southeast (SE) FireMap Landsat Burned Area
Chris Matechik, a remote sensing analyst from Tall Timbers, provides background on the Landsat burned area products and how they were developed to be collected consistently over space and time with fine spatial resolution. This video explains how the Landsat algorithm functions, how the burned areas are mapped, and what makes the data more comprehensive than alternative datasets.
Southeast (SE) FireMap Fire History Metrics
Holly Nowell, director of the Smoke Science Program at Tall Timbers discusses the fire history metrics included in the Southeast FireMap. This video explains how condensing the annual burned area products into smaller data layers provides more digestible and usable information for land managers, and outlines the suite of fire history metrics included in the product.
Southeast (SE) FireMap Overview
Holly Nowell, director of the Smoke Science Program at Tall Timbers introduces The Southeast FireMap as a project developed to address the critical need for tracking fire patterns across southeastern U.S. lands, where fire is essential for ecosystem health and fire-dependent species. This video walks through phase one of the project and details the findings that Landsat burned area products would be most suitable for creating a comprehensive fire mapping system, which will help quantify the value and track the implementation of prescribed burning practices that are common but poorly documented across the Southeast.
WLFW East Region Conservation Webinar Series: Northern Bobwhite Session #13 “Quail Harvest Management”
Session 13 of the “Northern Bobwhite” mini-series was presented by Dwayne Elmore with Tall Timbers. This session focuses on the basics of harvest management and the science behind it. Topics covered include compensatory vs additive harvest, historical context about small game regulations, and bobwhite population ecology basics.
WLFW East Region Conservation Webinar Series: Northern Bobwhite Session #12 “Precision Ag and Bobwhites”
Session 12 of the “Northern Bobwhite” mini-series was presented by Jacob Taylor with Quail Forever in Tennessee. This session focuses on the basics of precision ag and how to use it to create bobwhite habitat. Topics covered include precision ag definition, return on investment, and the economics of including various practices into a conservation plan.
